Love gets you started, A System keeps you going
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle
Great to be back and have you all here as well in 2019, here’s hoping you had a wonderful holiday filled with love and lots of great food. If you are like almost everyone else on the planet, I’m sure you have set goals or resolutions for this year and you are daring to go out there and smash them.
But before you pull the hammer out, let us be honest. Most of you are not going to accomplish any of your goals, some will never start, some will die out in a few days, some in a few months. Tragic I know but that is the reality that we are in.
The fact that you love to accomplish something does not give you enough momentum to see it through because love is an act. It is based on an emotional attachment that is characterised by moods and feelings hence a system is critical in accomplishing goals because a system works outside of the realm of emotion.
I had time to sit just reviewing my resolutions for this year, asking myself what are the main things that need to get done for me to feel this year is my best one yet. So I began auditing my values and habits to ensure alignment and integrity and reviewing the game plans for my businesses and personal life because clarity breeds mastery.
there’s no point in spending your finest hours climbing mountains, only to realise that at the end of the quarter/year/decade/life you climbed the wrong ones. Click To TweetWhich brings me to the main idea of today’s post: Our Resolutions.
Seems so obvious to say that one of the mission-critical moves for enduring success is to build your daily life around your deepest priorities. Seems like such a platitude to offer that there’s no point in spending your finest hours climbing mountains, only to realise that at the end of the quarter/year/decade/life you climbed the wrong ones.
Seems so common to suggest that it’s foolish to invest your best days pursuing ideals that later turn out to be a success according to someone else’s definition rather than your own. But in this Age of Dramatic Distraction–where so many of us are in a constant state of relentless stimulation over things that ultimately will have amounted to nothing, this way of thinking is rare. And the main reason why is because we do not put systems in place to help us accomplish what we set out to accomplish. With no pattern or structure there is no order, where there is no order it is difficult to measure progress and where you can’t measure progress you do not see results.
So today I want to challenge you to a 90-day challenge, and all I want you to do is to write down your priority resolution for this year and repeat it every day without fail for 90 days. It could be going to the gym, not smoking, calling a loved one, buying someone flowers, jogging, writing, drawing, learning a new craft. Dedicate these first 90 days of the year to that one thing you love the most this year and see if a pattern will not form in the end. Be intentional and do not put your resolutions in the back seat but be proactive in making the necessary adjustments to aid you in achieving them.
The beauty about systems is they work even when you do not want them to, and cultivating such a habit allows you to achieve more of your resolutions even when they seem unattainable, even when you have fallen out of love with the idea, it gets to a point where it is muscle memory. Your resolutions should become your non-negotiables, your all or nothing, your do or die, your come hell or high waters.
So may I suggest, that in this world where so many people are following the herd and swiftly moving in circles, you rise from the crowd and get uber-clear on what you really want your days to stand for in 2019 by writing your own “90-Day Challenge.” And above all else, then start living it. Today.
